A Fact Sheet, provided by The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada can be found by clicking here.

In this fact sheet the following questions are answered:

What is behavioural advertising?

What information can be collected?

Who's in the business of online behavioural advertising?

Are there benefits to behavioural advertising?

Should I be concerned about behavioural advertising?

Are advertisers allowed to track my personal information as they please?

Well, don't I get a say about being tracked for advertising purposes?

What can I do if I don't want to be tracked for advertising purposes? (Shown Below)

WHAT CAN I DO IF I DON'T WANT TO BE TRACKED?

1. Web browser settings can be adjusted to block cookies, however this may interfere and delete traditional cookies. More information on cookies and tracking can be found on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada's Fact Sheet, Cookies - Following the Crumbs.

2. Special tools can be installed and used in your internet browser to clear tracking technologies. More information on how you can prevent tracking can be found at  http://donottrack.us.

3.  Search engines, such as Google and Yahoo allow users to set their privacy preferences and opt out of internet-based advertising. However, this will only allow you to select which categories of ads you would like to limit or to see. This option does not allow users to opt out of behavioural tracking altogether.

"The Interactive Advertising Bureau Canada has recently released its Self-Regulation Framework For Online Behavioural Advertising, which is currently being implemented by the Canadian online advertising, marketing, publishers industry. It will provide you with both a notice – through an icon or text –and a one-click access to opt-out of tracking and behavioural advertising. You will find more information on the subject on the Interactive Advertising Bureau website at http://www.iabcanada.com."
